As part of the M03_Construir module, the Singular Structures team, led by David Gallardo, organized a workshop where MArch students had the opportunity to take on a challenge directly related to their area of specialization.
Following a theoretical lecture given by David Gallardo himself from Germany, where he is currently conducting a research stay, the Singular Structures team presented an exercise focused on designing a unique and daring structure. This challenge required students to develop innovative solutions that could be considered true structural feats. Through this workshop, students had to propose viable construction solutions for the structure, integrating not only aesthetics and functionality but also technical feasibility and safety.
Throughout the process, students received constant and direct support from the members of the Singular Structures team, who not only provided technical guidance but also shared valuable knowledge acquired over years of experience in structural calculation and design. This support was essential, as each team member contributed their unique perspective and expertise in specific areas, helping students overcome technical and conceptual challenges. Additionally, the professionals from Singular Structures fostered a collaborative environment where students could discuss their ideas and receive continuous feedback, further enriching the learning process. The active participation of these experts allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of how the theoretical principles learned in class are applied to real and complex projects. This hands-on approach, focused on solving real-world problems, gave them a clearer vision of the challenges they will face in their professional careers and how to integrate different disciplines within the architectural design process, making the connection between theory and practice not only immediate but also deeply enriching for their development as future architects.
David Gallardo, PhD in Architecture from UPV, professor at ETSAV, and founder of the Singular Structures studio, specializes in structural calculation and has pushed the limits of physical laws in his projects. Throughout his career, he has designed and calculated structures for various architecture studios, contributing to innovative projects such as the Cliff House for FSA and the Hofmann House. His teaching approach allows him to convey complex structural concepts in a practical and accessible manner. Singular Structures, the studio led by Gallardo, is characterized by its focus on designing innovative and distinctive structures. Among its most significant projects are unique architectural structures that employ innovative geometries and materials. Its portfolio includes a wide range of projects known for their creativity, functionality, and structural efficiency, making significant contributions to the architectural and urban landscape with works that challenge traditional conventions in design and construction.
