The workshop “Making to Think,” led by Fran Silvestre, has officially begun. In this program, students explore model-making as a key tool in architectural design. Through these sessions, they work with various techniques and materials to materialize ideas, fostering creativity and spatial understanding from the conceptual phase to the materialization of the project.
Module 02_Research has kicked off with the workshop “Making to Think,” directed and taught by Fran Silvestre, director of the MArch programs. These sessions delve into the theory proposed by Juhani Pallasmaa in his book The Thinking Hand, shaping ideas with one’s own hands. Students explore various techniques for creating conceptual phase models, working with sculpture, plastic arts, and the basics of foundry. They also have the opportunity to experiment with different materials to give shape to their ideas.
Model-making is an essential tool in architecture, as it allows abstract concepts to be transformed into physical representations that enhance the understanding of spatial and structural relationships in a design. This process, known as “thinking with your hands,” not only stimulates creativity but also improves problem-solving skills and the exploration of different solutions in a tangible way. By materializing ideas, architects can detect details that might go unnoticed in drawings, which, in turn, enhances the quality and precision of designs. Additionally, models allow for the visualization of spaces and the interaction of their elements in a concrete way, facilitating communication with clients and teams, who can experience the project’s features firsthand.
Through this workshop, MArch program students not only learn the importance of models as a fundamental tool in the architectural design process but also begin their training in transitioning from idea to materialization. This hands-on exercise helps them develop a deeper understanding of how to approach the different phases of an architectural project, from the conceptual phase to the detailing stage. By working directly with physical models, students immerse themselves in the creative process, enabling them to apply this knowledge to future projects with a more comprehensive and reflective approach.
