Refunctionalization of the Zebro Viewpoint by Álvaro Siza Vieira: A New Architectural Jewel in Serra do Moradal

The Serra do Moradal, in Portugal, has added a new architectural jewel to its landscape with the refunctionalization of the Zebro Viewpoint, a project led by the renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. This viewpoint, which overlooks the extensive valley crossed by the Zêzere River, is strategically located on a rocky massif next to the ER 238 road, taking advantage of the natural topographical features of the site to offer an unparalleled view.

The design of the Zebro Lookout is as imposing as it is simple. It consists of a circular platform supported by a console, fixed directly to the rock and built in exposed reinforced concrete, a material that dialogues perfectly with the surrounding rocky environment. The structure seems to float above the landscape, integrating harmoniously into the natural environment and offering a unique visual experience.

Access to the viewing platform is via a ramp with a 110 cm high railing, built with rods and a flexible stainless steel mesh, ensuring safety without obstructing the views. The platform railing, also made of exposed concrete and 110 cm high, completes the structure, providing a robust and minimalist look.

One of the most prominent elements of the design is the incorporation of two eyes in the circular structure, both filled with operable glass plates, which allow a direct connection with the surrounding landscape, increasing the sensation of being suspended in the air.

The Zebro Lookout is not only a destination in itself, but also integrates seamlessly into the International Appalachian Trail, which runs through much of the Serra do Moradal. This trail, popular with nature lovers and hikers, now has a new point of attraction that respects and enhances the characteristics of the existing climbing trails in the area.

With this intervention, Álvaro Siza Vieira once again demonstrates his ability to create works that respect and highlight the natural environment, while offering a unique architectural experience. The Zebro Viewpoint is not only a place to contemplate nature, but also a work of art in itself, inviting visitors to stop and appreciate the beauty of the landscape from a new perspective.
