On October 8 at 4:00 p.m., the opening ceremony and presentation of the 2024-2025 MArch programs (specifically, the MArch postgraduate degree in applied architecture, the MArch master’s degree in architecture, design and innovation and the MArch master’s degree in architecture, design and business administration) took place, thus marking the beginning of a new academic stage for students.

During this day, students have had the opportunity to meet each other for the first time in many cases. In addition, they were able to familiarize themselves with the facilities where the course will take place, including the classrooms and common areas, as well as with the internal faculty that makes up each of the programs, made up of professionals with whom they will have the opportunity to interact during the development of the course. In the same way, they have had their first contact with the Espai Alfaro, a multidisciplinary space that hosts a large part of the development of the MArch programs, with the exception of trips and visits. During their tour, the students have visited the Alfaro Hofmann Collection, an impressive and attractive display of industrial design focused on household appliances from different periods, which allows us to understand the evolution of everyday objects and the electrification and modernization of the home starting from the kitchen space. They were also able to learn about the legacy of the sculptor Andreu Alfaro, whose monumental works are in the courtyard, but to which we can add the small-format works located in the old workshop, and which, in addition to allowing us to understand the artist’s artistic evolution, represent a direct connection between art and architecture, two fundamental disciplines for the development of the course.

In addition, the students were able to see the NIU Houses systematized architecture project, an innovative proposal for industrialized housing designed by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos, whose precision and minimalist design has been recognized internationally. During this visit, they were also able to see Fran Silvestre Arquitectos’ own studio, located above the classroom where the classes will be held. This first approach to the facilities and the academic and professional environment that will surround them during the course is key to motivating the students and preparing them for the challenges they will face in the coming months.
