José Carlos Oliveira, founder and director of the Portuguese studio NOArq, recently visited Valencia to give a lecture as part of the MArch program. During his talk, he shared some of his most significant projects from recent years with the students of the MArch programs, whom he had previously met during the trip to Porto.
His studio, with a career spanning two decades, has worked for both private clients and public entities. Among the projects he presented, some were developed in the residential sector, standing out for their meticulous attention to detail—an increasingly rare approach in contemporary architecture. He has also worked on larger-scale projects, such as the Câmara Municipal de Trofa, as well as other recent initiatives emerging from competitions, including the Halo footbridge in Vigo and the new bridge that will cross the Douro River, connecting Porto with Gaia. This bridge will be designed for both pedestrians and cyclists and will also accommodate public transportation services, such as the metro.
Additionally, he spoke about his professional experience in Álvaro Siza’s studio, sharing his concerns and lessons learned as he entered the professional world, as well as the importance of working alongside one of the most influential architects of our time.
Although José Carlos Oliveira studied at ESAP, he had the privilege of training at Álvaro Siza’s studio, where he joined several decades ago. A few years ago, he decided to establish his own firm, with offices in Porto and Trofa, from where he has developed personal projects, all characterized by a distinct architectural language. He is an architect who has enjoyed sparking debate, with a focus on designing the whole. He has experimented with materials and solutions adapted to each case, but what has truly interested him is building the place, the fabric, and the object. Each of his projects has been carefully thought out, reflecting a constant and reflective approach rather than an immediate or superficial one. Furthermore, it is important to highlight that he continues to uphold the artisanal care for Portuguese form, a trait that remains a distinctive characteristic of his work.
