New Project by Fran Silvestre Arquitectos: House in Sotogrande

Located in front of the Sotogrande golf course, the layout of this house invites you to experience the shadow formed between the ground plane and the roof that extends above it. A generous roof overhang not only provides shelter from the intense Cádiz sun but also protects against the heavy rains descending from the Sierra de Grazalema.
Set deep within the structure, a wooden volume unfolds, offering the necessary privacy to the bedrooms while adding warmth to every corner. Four distinct boundaries define the spatiality of the house: the ground plane, the shadow cast by the architectural overhang, the glass that ensures efficient interior climate control, and the welcoming boundary of the wood.
The house is accessed from the upper street, a strategic point offering a privileged view of the water-covered roof and the surrounding landscape. The water layer on the roof serves as thermal and acoustic insulation, regulating the building’s temperature. It absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night, reducing the need for heating and air conditioning. The design also required the use of materials with warm tones throughout. Inside, the compact program is distributed around a central communication core that houses skylights to illuminate the central spaces and provide access to the upper water layer.
The roof and ground planes are carefully offset to create a covered entryway that welcomes visitors and an infinity pool extending over the golf course. The goal is to minimize environmental impact, live between two planes, and promote the experience of something as simple and beautiful as an inhabited shadow in Sotogrande.
