The renowned architect from Granada, Juan Domingo Santos, recently visited MArch to share his professional experiences.

His presentation was divided into two parts: The first part focused on the rehabilitation and restoration of the San Isidro Sugar Factory in Granada. His studio is currently based in the alcohol distillation tower of this former sugar factory, which he originally transformed into an industrial space repurposed for living and working. After facing numerous challenges, this project has successfully evolved into what will soon become the future campus of the University of Granada. Additionally, he showcased his deep connection to the site through the short film Un Encuentro, directed by Juan Bollaín, in which he narrates his life and experiences at the factory since 1986, highlighting his efforts in revitalizing this abandoned industrial complex.

In the second part of the lecture, Juan Domingo shared his vision for the present and future of the San Isidro Sugar Factory, following its acquisition by the University. He presented the new facilities and proposed uses for the various buildings within the complex, which will be transformed into an innovation center focused on fields such as artificial intelligence, while always maintaining its connection with the city and the surrounding landscape.

Juan Domingo’s career is particularly fascinating, both professionally—having collaborated with renowned architects such as Álvaro Siza—and in the academic and theoretical realm, having received the prestigious FAD Award for Thought and Criticism. He has been closely linked to the Technical School of Architecture of Granada since its inception and currently holds the Chair of Architectural Projects at the University.
