The first session of the M04_Digital Innovation module has taken place, officially marking the beginning of the MArch Postgraduate Program in Design and Digital Innovation. This introductory session was dedicated to the concept of visualization, a fundamental element in design and digital communication.

Its goal was to provide a reference framework that will serve as the foundation for all the classes to be held in the coming weeks. Through a theoretical and reflective approach, students were able to understand the importance of visualization, its historical evolution, and its impact on the field of design. This first session was not only an introduction to the module but also a starting point that invites students to explore how images, tools, and technologies have transformed the way we represent and understand the world.

The content of the class followed a chronological path that allowed for the analysis of the historical background of visualization. It began with a study of the Renaissance, a key period during which the first principles of visual representation based on perspective and proportion were developed. From there, the timeline moved forward to the 19th century, a moment when new disciplines such as photography and cinema revolutionized the way we capture and represent reality. These advances marked a break from traditional methods and paved the way for more dynamic and accessible forms of visualization. Finally, the session addressed the crucial role of computing and digital technologies, analyzing how they have completely transformed the way we generate, interpret, and use images in design and communication.

In addition to this historical overview, the class placed special emphasis on the function and purpose of visualization within contemporary design. It reflected on what it means to visualize in this context and what its true objective is, highlighting its close relationship with communication and the transmission of ideas. Throughout the session, several key questions were raised to encourage reflection: What is visualization useful for? How does it influence our perception? What tools help us improve the way we convey information visually? These questions were used to promote critical thinking among students and to lay the groundwork for the upcoming modules, in which the digital techniques and tools that define today’s landscape of design and innovation will be explored in depth.
