Extremadura has increased its cultural offer in recent years with the opening of one of the most attractive museums in Cáceres and, therefore, in Extremadura: the Helga de Alvear Museum, an architectural masterpiece designed by the National Architecture Award and MArch speaker Emilio Tuñón. Located in the heart of Cáceres, this museum stands as a new cultural epicenter in Spain, destined to house one of the most important contemporary art collections in Europe.

The museum project was developed in several stages, beginning with the rehabilitation and adaptation of historic buildings to integrate them into the new architectural ensemble. The initial phase focused on the restoration of the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo, a Renaissance building that now connects harmoniously with the modern structure of the museum. Subsequently, new rooms and exhibition spaces were built, using contemporary materials that dialogue with the historic surroundings of Cáceres.

Tuñón’s design stands out for its elegance and simplicity, with a focus on natural light and open spaces that invite visitors to an immersive experience. The building’s clean lines and geometric volumes create a striking visual contrast with the old town, while respecting its heritage character.

The content of the Helga de Alvear Museum’s exhibitions reflects the collector’s passion for contemporary art. The galleries house an impressive collection that includes works by internationally renowned artists such as Ai Weiwei, Olafur Eliasson, and Gerhard Richter, as well as creations by emerging young talents. The collection is eclectic and spans a variety of media, from painting and sculpture to multimedia installations and photography.

In addition to permanent exhibitions, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions that explore current themes and present innovative works of art, fostering an ongoing dialogue between the past and the present. These temporary exhibitions are designed to attract a diverse public and encourage interest in contemporary art in all its forms.

The Helga de Alvear Museum is not only a space for the contemplation of art, but also a center for education and community participation. It offers a wide range of educational activities, workshops and programs for all ages, with the aim of enriching the cultural life of the region and promoting knowledge and appreciation of contemporary art.

With the opening of the Helga de Alvear Museum, Cáceres consolidates its position as a premier cultural destination, and the vision of Helga de Alvear and Emilio Tuñón materializes in a space that celebrates creativity and critical thinking through art.
