Sevak Asatrián leads the session From Contact to Project, where he addresses the complete process from the first contact with a client to the initial sketches, emphasizing the interpretation of needs, conceptualization, and efficient project management. By integrating theory and practice, students learn to systematize architectural design, combining creativity and functionality.
MArch students have begun the module M02_Research with an inaugural session titled From Contact to Project, taught by Sevak Asatrián. This class is designed to provide students with a deep, structured, and practical understanding of the process that spans from the initial approach to a potential client to the creation of the first sketches in an architectural studio. The session’s content details each critical stage of this professional journey. It starts with the initial communication phase, highlighting the importance of establishing an effective and trustworthy relationship with the client. This phase is crucial for interpreting and gathering the needs, aspirations, and constraints that will define the project. Next, the session delves into the tools and methodologies that translate those needs into concrete and tangible ideas. This process involves the conceptualization of the architectural proposal, where creativity and technique merge to shape the initial sketches, forming the foundation of the final project.
Beyond the significance of initial contact and conceptualization, the session explores how these stages integrate into the workflow of an architectural studio. Students are given clear guidance on organizing and systematizing this process to improve efficiency and responsiveness in complex projects. This includes the implementation of digital and analog tools, the management of interdisciplinary teams, and continuous communication with the client to ensure the project evolves in alignment with their expectations. The session also underscores the role of soft skills, such as empathy, active listening, and effective communication, which are essential for building a strong relationship with the client and understanding their vision for the project. In this regard, students develop a holistic perspective that goes beyond technical competencies, preparing them to approach architectural projects with both a human and professional focus.
Complementing this, the knowledge gained in this class integrates with concepts addressed in the sessions Making to Think. This pedagogical approach, a hallmark of the MArch program, encourages interaction between practice and theory, allowing students to experiment with innovative and creative methods that enhance their ability to solve real-world problems. By systematizing design, planning, and execution processes, students not only optimize workflows but also gain a competitive edge by being prepared to face the challenges of the professional world with clear and strategic vision. Through this combined approach, MArch students are equipped to manage architectural projects professionally, aligning creativity, functionality, and efficiency across all stages of architectural development. This comprehensive training prepares them to excel in an increasingly demanding market, where the ability to combine innovative design with practical and viable solutions is key to success.
