In recent days, students from the MArch programs, as part of module 03_Construir, have had the opportunity to discover and work with a material that is becoming increasingly common: solid surface
During the workshop, led by Paco Pardo, participants explored the properties and benefits of this material, learned about the various ways it can be applied, and gained insights into its characteristics and versatility, which they experienced firsthand through the manipulation of small pieces. Thanks to its thermoformable properties, solid surface allowed them to experiment with the material and create a wide variety of shapes. This highly versatile material, widely used in architecture and interior design, is composed of a blend of polyester resin and finely milled homogeneous solids.
It is initially presented as a white powder, which gives it thermal properties, translucency, and a distinctive white finish, although its color can be customized as desired. One of the main advantages of solid surface, as highlighted in the workshop, is its ability to be molded and thermoformed into a vast range of shapes and designs. This makes it an ideal choice for surfaces such as kitchen and bathroom countertops, wall cladding, and, as demonstrated in multiple projects, even facades.
Additionally, its non-porous and water-resistant structure makes it easy to clean and maintain. Another outstanding feature of solid surface is its ability to join surfaces seamlessly, eliminating visible joints and enabling continuous, clean designs. Its resistance to stains, scratches, and impacts makes it a highly durable material, perfect for high-traffic spaces.
Paco Pardo, an industrial expert in designing with new materials, has worked for years with DuPont’s solid surface, known as Corian. His career has led him to collaborate with various architects and designers, including the studio Fran Silvestre Arquitectos.
