The Madrid-based architect Emilio Tuñón delivered a lecture at MArch, where he shared six small- and medium-scale projects with the students, entirely different from those explored in previous courses.

The renowned architect Emilio Tuñón, recipient of the National Architecture Award and the Gold Medal for Fine Arts, and creator of some of today’s most recognized projects, such as the Royal Collections, MUSAC, and the Atrio Hotel, recently visited MArch to give a lecture to students enrolled in the master’s and postgraduate programs in Applied Architecture.

On this occasion, Tuñón presented six projects, five of which are residential and one an office building. For each project, he detailed the work process, from the initial concept and references used to the materialization and finishes, justifying both the choice of materials and the design. Each project can also be understood as a historical reinterpretation, adapting to new materials and modern ways of living while consistently demonstrating a refined respect for history and heritage. The final project presented was the headquarters of the Arquia Foundation on Tutor Street in Madrid, where he showcased his mastery of regulations to maximize space and enhance interior lighting. After his lecture, students had the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with him, benefiting from both his extensive experience and his excellent teaching skills.

Emilio Tuñón’s career stands out as one of the most significant among contemporary architects. After working in heritage preservation, he joined Rafael Moneo’s studio, where he spent several years and met his future partner, Luis Moreno Mansilla. Later, following Mansilla’s passing, he continued his journey independently until recently partnering with Carlos Martínez de Albornoz to form Tuñón Albornoz Arquitectos.
