The Dar Al Marefa School in Dubai, designed by RCR Arquitectes, merges innovative architecture with advanced pedagogy. Featuring dynamic spaces, natural light, and interactive zones, it fosters creativity and learning. Lattices and pergolas integrate the design with the local climate, inspiring growth and discovery.
The renowned architectural firm RCR Arquitectes, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2017, has conceived one of the most ambitious and creative educational projects in the Persian Gulf: the Dar Al Marefa School in Dubai. This educational center, designed as a space to encourage creativity, curiosity, and learning among young students, stands out as a landmark for exploring the world from the United Arab Emirates. Integrated into the MArch Advanced master’s program in architecture, design, and business administration, also led by RCR, the project combines architectural innovation and advanced pedagogy, creating a unique and inspiring environment for the intellectual and emotional development of its students.
RCR’s architectural proposal is organized through a system of color-coded zones tailored to the specific needs of each student group. The spaces promote interaction and idea exchange, providing strategic meeting points to stimulate creativity and collaborative learning. The design features an enveloping lattice that not only filters natural light, creating a harmonious interplay of light and shadow, but also serves as an effective solar protection solution, addressing the local climatic demands. Additionally, textile and metal mesh pergolas connect the various architectural volumes, providing shade and continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Dar Al Marefa campus has been conceived as a small city of knowledge, where modular volumes of different shapes and heights generate a dynamic and vibrant structure. This composition creates courtyards and outdoor pathways that flood the interior spaces with natural light, while the colors, forms, and interior vegetation contribute to an animated environment that invites discovery. Architecture thus becomes a tool to stimulate imagination, learning, and innovation, generating a space full of interwoven patterns and winding paths that reflect the spirit of creativity and growth that defines this school.
