Once again, the renowned Italo-Portuguese architecture studio Correia/Ragazzi visited Valencia to deliver a lecture to MArch students, where they shared some of their most notable projects, as well as their influences and personal concerns.
During the lecture, they discussed Graça’s collaboration with Portuguese architect and Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura, with whom she worked between 1989 and 1995. They also mentioned their main sources of inspiration, citing figures such as Ruy D’Athouguia and Álvaro Siza. The talk included reflections on transdisciplinarity in architecture, with references to creators like Robert Mapplethorpe, Fernando Pessoa, and Laurie Anderson. They emphasized the importance of knowledge transmission and how ideas evolve over time, illustrating this process with figures such as Billie Eilish and Michael Jackson, who were in turn inspired by Fred Astaire, or the impact of Picasso, influenced by Velázquez, Goya, and Manet. They also mentioned the influences of Schinkel and Mies van der Rohe’s work on their architectural vision.
To conclude, they explored several of their most significant projects, such as Casa Ricardo Pinto, Casa em Valadares, and the Meinedo church and parish center, a project that originated from a competition and that MArch students had the opportunity to visit during their trip to Porto. They also discussed Quinta em Guimarães, the Marechal 720 residential project, which also won a competition, and Quinta de Velude, a highly personal project developed in a unique natural setting.
The Correia/Ragazzi architecture studio was founded in 2005 by Graça Correia and Roberto Ragazzi. Graça Correia, originally from Portugal, completed her studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), one of the country’s most prestigious institutions. Meanwhile, Roberto Ragazzi, originally from Italy, studied at the IUAV University of Venice before moving to Porto. Both, with a strong academic background and a shared architectural vision, decided to establish their studio in Porto, where they currently reside and develop their work. Since its foundation, Correia/Ragazzi has been distinguished by its contemporary approach, integrating tradition and modernity in its designs. Their work is characterized by a deep reflection on context and landscape, always striving for harmony between the natural environment and architectural intervention.
