António Choupina, Portuguese architect and founder of CH.A, is known for his close collaboration with Álvaro Siza on prominent cultural projects and his work as a curator at renowned institutions. During his recent visit to MArch, he shared with the students Siza’s influence on contemporary architecture, reviewing his most iconic works and some of the projects visited in Porto.

The Portuguese architect António Choupina, with whom the MArch students recently met during the trip to Porto, visited MArch to share his professional experience and review his career. Choupina, who maintains a close relationship with Álvaro Siza, accompanied the students in the exhibition that he himself curated in Serralves on the work of SANAA, providing a unique perspective on contemporary architecture.

During his presentation at MArch, António Choupina gave a tour through the beginnings of Álvaro Siza together with Fernando Távora, highlighting how, from a very young age, Siza began to develop individual projects under the influence and support of his mentor. He then explored some of the maestro’s most iconic works, revealing the architectural and conceptual depth of his projects and commenting on details about the works that the students were able to visit during their trip to Porto. The session also allowed for reflection on Siza’s influence on architects of younger generations, covering from his first works to his most recent projects and gave rise to an interesting debate that was extended due to the enriching questions raised by the students.

António Choupina, an architect from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, founded the CH.A (CHoupina.Arquitectos) studio in 2010. His achievements include notable interventions such as the crypt of Charles V in Granada and the Sverre Fehn Pavilion in Norway. He has worked in collaboration with Álvaro Siza on cultural projects such as the Álvaro Siza Pavilion at the China International Furniture Fair, in collaboration with institutions such as Aedes Berlin, the Vitra Design Museum and the Aga Khan Network. As a curator, he has directed exhibitions in prestigious spaces such as the Serralves Museum, the Espai Alfaro and the Marques da Silva Foundation, as well as contributing to numerous publications that intertwine architecture, art and philosophy.
